Now here’s a thought…over on theweek.com, there’s a great article that sheds some light on “a growing number of pregnant woman criminalized in the U.S. for losing their unborn babies due to drug use or failed suicide attempts.”
Is it murder if a pregnant woman attempts suicide… and the baby dies?
Take the case of Indiana resident Bei Bei Shuai, a 35-year-old Indiana woman awaiting trial for swallowing rat poison that killed her baby, though her attempts where to kill herself. (Distraught over her boyfriend/ child’s father leaving her) They pose the question in their opinion brief: Is she a criminal, or a victim of anti-abortion politics?
(And I top that with: is a successful suicide by a pregnant mother–that kills her and the child) kinda of sort of a “double murder”? I mean who are you going to charge in that case, but still…)
